  • BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE

Illness doesn't always have a physical cause. We employ trained animal behaviorists who help determine the cause of such disorders as separation anxiety and obsessive behavior, and then develop a treatment regimen for the client. Our clinic offers a 'first steps' dog training for toy breeds every Wednesday at our clinic with 'Look What I Can Do!' trainer Leslie Fisher. Larger breed group classes are available at a separate location. Leslie also does private housecalls! Leslie can be contacted by telephone at 443-350-6820 or email her at gonbrdn@dol.net.
We also communicate with a behavior specialist in Pennsylvania for more extensive cases.

  • BOARDING

Quality care as well as peace of mind is our goal for you and your pet. Pets are like our children – we feed, nurture and lavish attention on them. Our highly qualified kennel attendants do the same when you can't be there. We provide tender loving care (such as brushing and cuddling), and supervised outdoor playtime to keep them happy and active. They are fed a high quality, Hill's Science Diet dry food twice a day. You may prefer to bring in your own food. Sometimes a sudden change in diet can cause upset stomach and diarrhea. Employees are trained to observe animals for signs of distress and/or illness, and will be regularly checking on your pet. Please do not bring blankets, towels or beds for your pet. We provide your pet with these items and it reduces the risk of your personal items getting soiled or misplaced.

All boarding pets must be current on vaccines and flea prevention. We can provide those services for your convenience.

  • DENTAL CARE

Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. We use modern  dental equipment to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Our technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. Advanced dental care is also available. Call us today for an estimate.

  • MICROCHIPPING

Microchips have helped reunite thousands of pets with their families.  One in three pets will become lost during their lifetime. And according to the American Humane Association, only about 17 percent of lost dogs and two percent of lost cats ever find their way back to their original owners.

We offer the most widely used microchip products to increase the chances of a safe recovery. To microchip your pet, a tiny chip is injected about the size of a grain of rice just under your pet's skin between the shoulder blades. The tiny HomeAgain anti-migration microchip is safe and reliable. Our current cost for microchipping is $57.96. Our clinic handles the registration process and fees so that it you don't have to be boggled with paperwork. Of course you  review it before we mail it out.

HomeAgain offers their standard plan which is no fee other than the cost of putting the microchip in by your veterinarian. This includes life long registration.

HomeAgain also offers a more advanced plan. For an annual fee of $14.99 (Animal Hospital of Havre de Grace pays for the first year!) you will recieve a:

    * 24/7 Emergency medical care hotline you can call if your vet's office is closed or unavailable.
    * Online medical information so that you can view your pets current vaccinations
    * Pet ID Cards. Useful in case of an emergency or validation at kennels and such.
If your pet gets lost, HomeAgain will:
    * 24/7 Reconvery specialist will take down vital information and issue an immediate lost pet alert to ALL local vets, shelters and Pet Rescuers in the area
    * Provides access for owners to create a 'lost pet' poster on the HomeAgain website.
    * Provide medical information to shelters and clinic to ensure proper care of the animal.

  • SURGERY

We offer the most advanced surgical techniques and technology. All patients are carefully screened for safety, and anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet. Surgical services and facilities include: board certified surgeon available for consultation; fully trained veterinary and technical staff, to ensure the safest, most efficient, state-of-the-art procedures for your pet; heated surgery tables for greater comfort; advanced sterilization techniques; ECG and oxygen saturation monitors; intensive after surgery care and full blood testing.

Modern veterinary surgery on dogs and cats is done under conditions designed to minimize the chances of bacterial contamination. Instruments, gowns, towels and other items such as scalpels and clamps are sterilized in an autoclave at 270 degrees under pressure for various lengths of time to kill any microorganisms. As well, the surgeon scrubs the hands and wears sterilized surgical gloves and also wears a gown if the surgery is more than a minor procedure.

  • KITTY AND CANINE CRAIG

Over half of U.S. cats and dogs are overweight. Pet obesity can be caused by a number of factors, including genetics, high fat diets, overeating and lack of exercise. Also underlying health problems, such as hypothyroidism, can also lead to weight gain. For a cat or dog a few extra pounds can add undue stress to bones and organs. Those excess pounds can even shorten your pet's life.

Common health problems associated with obesity include:

    • Lameness and Arthritis

    • Diabetes Mellitus

    • Heart Disease

    • Exercise intolerance and overheating

    • Increased anesthetic and surgical risks

    • Reduced life span

Obesity is defined as enough excess body fat to impair health or body function. Your pet is considered obese if it is 20 to 25% above ideal weight for the breed.

With our Kitty and Canine Craig Programs we will create a nutrition plan that feeds your pet to his or her ideal body condition. We will help you recognize the signs of obesity in your pet. We will help you adjust feeding amounts as your pet's activity level and body condition change. Once a month you will bring your pet in and we will weigh the pet and monitor improvement, give you a new feeding guidline, and go over helpful tips to introduce your pet to a healthier lifestyle.
